Currently running operations in feed manufacturing, food (eggs, milk) manufacturing, full fat soy manufacturing, drying corn and trading of raw materials, plans to start manufacturing poultry and red meat and milk and dairy products.

Özer MATLI, Chairman of the Executive Board, says their plan is to become the strongest link in the food chain in Turkey by offering products for animals and humans, and he answered our questions on the operation of Matlı Grubu in feed industry and their plans for the future.

Dear Özer, Matlı Gıda Grubu is one of the major industrial organizations in Turkey. You are running operating in various areas, including manufacture of feed and feed additives to trading of raw materials and livestock products. Could you tell us about the foundation and success story of your company, which has been on a successful path so far?
The founder of Matlı Gıda Grubu is our father, Ömer Matlı. Ömer Matlı started his career in trade of onions in Karacabey district of Bursa in 1965, and then moved to livestock trading and consequently dairy farming in early 1970’s. Later, he ventured in paddy business with the commercial prestige and accumulated capital he had with his success in these businesses. With the paddy plant he founded in 1980, he went from trading into industry.

Our late father Ömer Matlı decided to start manufacturing animal feed in 1986, and applied his investment decision by starting 10 tons/hour of feed for dairy and feeder cattle at the plant in Karacabey in 1988. In addition to this plant, he founded the first modern corn drying plant in the region in 1992.

After our father passed away in 1995, it was me and my brother Önder Matlı who took over the business. We incessantly continued our investment activities and in 2004, we launched full fat soy manufacturing plant and in 2005 we opened Ömer Matlı Animal Products Education and Research Centre. Furthermore, we opened our plants for manufacturing feed for ruminant, small cattle and poultry in Konya in 2006, in Turgutlu 2009, in Çorlu in 2011, in Samsun in 2013 and in Gaziantep in 2014. Meanwhile, we embarked on another industry in April 2010 and started manufacturing eggs.

You have already outlined this but to go into further details, what are the areas of activity and product groups of Matlı Gıda Grubu? What is the share of each unit in the total turnover of Matlı?
In the feed group, we manufacture and sell feed for small cattle, ruminant and poultry with our brand Proyem. We also sell feed additives under the Perfective brand. Our group for manufacturing and selling eggs continues its operations with the Burdan brand. We also trade raw materials. And we have the Ömer Matlı R&D Farm. This farm, where we produce 6 tons of milk per day, is the headquarters of our research and development operations.

In 2016, Matlı Gıda Grubu had a total turnover of 930 million TRL. This figure, which represents an increase by 29% as compared to 2015, includes 670 million TRL from feed products. It is followed by eggs with 105 million TRL, raw materials with 152 million TRL, and milk production with 3 million TRL.

As you mentioned earlier, you have numerous plants. Could you tell us about your manufacturing plants, your capacity and the technologies?
Matlı Gıda Grubu has a capacity to manufacture 1,320,000 tons of animal feed per year at 6 plants. In 2016 we manufacture 892,000 tons of feed, and we aim to increase this number to 2 million tons by 2020.

One of our 6 plants, the Karacabey plant is our feed manufacturing plant, and it is located on a an indoor area of 17,500 m2 in a land of 45,000 m2. The plant has a total raw material storage capacity of 60,000 tons, including 20,000 tons in horizontal storage and 40,000 tons in steel silos, and it can store a total of 1,300 tons of feed in 48 different types of products. This plant is continuously improved in terms of electrical and mechanical systems, and currently it has reached a capacity to manufacture 70 tons of feed per hour.

Our feed plant in Konya, which started operation in 2006 with a manufacturing capacity of 20 tons/hour, later reached a capacity of 40 tons/hour with an investment in 2007. This plant, which operates in an indoor area of 7,500 m2 in a land of 61,543 m2, has a total raw material storage capacity of 33,000 tons, including 18,000 tons in horizontal silos, and 15,000 tons in steel silos. Besides, it has a feed storage capacity of 1,500 tons.

Our feed manufacturing plant in Turgutlu was opened on May 23, 2009. At the plant which is established on an area of 31,500 m², all machine park, equipment and automation systems are of the latest technology. At the plant we have two lifted raw material reception line, horizontal silos for raw materials with a storage capacity of 3,000 m³, a closed horizontal storage with a capacity of 6.500 m², a steel silo with a storage capacity of 16,000 m³, and vertical product silos with a storage capacity of 3,000 m³. Our plant manufactures 2,000 tons of feed per day with a capacity of 100 tons/hour.

Our manufacturing plant in Çorlu is established on an area of 39,063 m². The storage section of the plant consists of two lifted raw material reception lines, vertical raw material silos with a storage capacity of 1,500 m³, closed horizontal storages with a capacity of 6,000 m² and 30,000 m³, and vertical product storages with a capacity of 1,500 m³. This plant manufactures 960 tons of feed per day, with a capacity of 40 tons/hour.

Our feed manufacturing plant in Samsun, which is established on an area of 19,000 m², has an indoor area of 10,000 m². Our horizontal storage area is 6,200 m². The plant has a manufacturing capacity of 50 tons/hour, and it has 30 raw material silos with a total capacity of 2,750 m³ and 42 product silos with a total capacity of 3,000 m³. The plant is also equipped with a bag packaging system on four lines, and casting load on one line, and has a specially designed manufacturing line for poultry feed.

Our feed manufacturing plant in Gaziantep is established on an area of 28,500 m² and has an indoor area of 10,000 m². This plant has a horizontal storage area of 6,000 m². The plant has a manufacturing capacity of 60 tons/hour, and it has 30 raw material silos with a total capacity of 2,750 m³ and 42 product silos with a total capacity of 3,000 m³. The plant is also equipped with a bag packaging system on four lines, and casting load on one line, and has a specially designed manufacturing line for poultry feed as well as 8 silos with a capacity of 5,000 tons.

Almost all of our feed plants have been established by taking the technological changes into consideration. At our plants, manufacturing is handled with the PLC automation control system without touch of a hand. Manufacturing is constantly supervised via quality control, by monitoring and recording in the reporting system every phase of the process thanks to the technological advantages. Thus, we ensure traceability and compliance with quality standards from the introduction of raw materials to the output of feed.

What is the position and role of Matlı Gıda Grubu in the Turkish feed market? What do you offer to your customers that is different from your competitors?
Matlı was ranked in 144th place on the list of ‘500 Leading Industrial Organizations in Turkey’ which was released by Istanbul Chamber of Industry, according to 2015 data, and it is the 98th largest feed company among approximately 30,000 feed companies around the world. We are the only company in Turkey with 6 feed plants and 450 retailers. Our annual feed manufacturing capacity is 1,320,000 tons in six plants. I believe there is no need to tell more about our position in the feed industry.

About the different services we offer to our customers: Matlı Gıda Grubu manufactures almost individually tailored products in the feed industry. We manufacture feed according to the rough feed resources of the breeder, the feeding habits of the breeder and regional nutritional habits, which is an approach that has been introduced by Matlı to the industry. Also, special feed products to enhance milk and seed yield are the products offered by Matlı. These are a few aspects that differentiate us.

What are your plans for the future? What is the role you want to play in the feed market in the future?
Our company operates and markets its feeds in 6 geographical regions across Turkey simultaneously. In 2016, we sold 810,000 tons of feed in Turkey. Our target is to become the “feed company of Turkey” by manufacturing 2 million tons of feed in 2020.

Do you have any exports or plans for the abroad?
In the exports of Matlı Grubu, Burdan Eggs stand out. Our exports of Burdan Eggs, which started with Iran and Turkmenistan markets, and which reached 6,750,000 USD in 2016, currently continues in Iraq, Oman, Macedonia, Georgia, Libya, Qatar, Syria and Azerbaijan.

While we are on the subject, could you tell us about your Burdan Eggs brand and your claim in this area?
We have been manufacturing eggs under the “Burdan” brand since April 2010. Our modern plant which is established on an area of 300,000 m2 with cutting-edge manufacturing technologies and bio-safety measures has a total capacity of 2,150,000 poultry in 14 coops. Our ultimate target is to manufacture 2 billion eggs in 2020.

Yes, we have a claim in manufacturing eggs, as a company which has proven its claim in manufacturing feed. Unlike the general approach, Burdan’s natural, fresh, clean and delicious eggs are produced by poultry that are completely fed with vegetable feeds, instead of animal feed, and they do not contain any additives. Another important characteristic of Burdan’s eggs is the absence of undesired odour in the eggs of our chicken which are fed with vegetable feed, unlike the eggs of poultry which are fed with feeds that contain animal proteins.

At Burdan’s egg plants, the eggs go through 38 inspection points from production to packaging. Thus, we do not have any dirty eggs or eggs in different size in Burdan egg packages. Burdan’s egg plants have the BRC (British Retail Consortium) certificate, which is the first and only “global food safety standard” in Turkey. Burdan’s eggs also have halal certificates from Turkish Standards Institute and Directorate of Religious Affairs.

And there is the R&D aspect. As far as we know, you especially consider this as an important subject. Could you tell us about the activities of Matlı Grubu in this area?
You are right, Matlı Gıda Grubu sees R&D as an important subject. For this purpose, we perform our R&D activities with the support of the Veterinary Faculty of Uludağ University, under a protocol signed with the university. These activities are performed at Ömer Matlı Academy, which is named after the founder of the group, and at the Animal Products Education and Research Centre and Training Farm, which are affiliated with the academy. The cattle feed with higher energy, better nutritional properties offering more yield of milk which is developed at this centre are first tried with the animals at the training farm, and then offered to breeders.

We have 110 sheep and 525 cattle at the training plant, including 187 dairy cattle. We often produce 6 tons of milk per day with these dairy cattle. The average daily milk yield of the dairy cattle at the training farm is 37 litres, which is a high yield that is obtained thanks to the feed that are developed at the R&D centre.

You also have a social responsibility project: “Livestock Breeding Academy”. Could you tell us about this project?
As Matlı Gıda Grubu, we took an important step in early 2013. The “Livestock Breeding Academy” of the virtual world was launched at www.hayvancilikakademisi.com. The Livestock Breeding Academy is a social responsibility project that is supported by Ömer Matlı Academy of Matlı Gıda Grubu. The website hosts news of the livestock breeding industry in Turkey and around the world, publishes articles of academics on the subject, and livestock breeders can easily access much needed information on this website.

What are your final remarks? What are your targets or projects for the future?
As Matlı Gıda Grubu we contribute to correct nutrition of dairy cattle, as well as correct and adequate nutrition of people with the milk and dairy products produced by these cattle. We also produce eggs to contribute with an important source of animal proteins. In the middle term, we plan to start manufacturing poultry meat and red meat, as well as milk and dairy products, to become a food group company that responds to the needs for proteins in Turkey. At Matlı Gıda Grubu, it is our primary target to become the strongest link in the food chain in Turkey by offering products for animals and humans.
